A bank in Austria, including the Austrian branch of a foreign bank, withholds the 25% Kapitalertragsteuer for you. A bank elsewhere in the EU pays gross and leaves the declaring to you. Both are on this page, with the rate, the minimum and the guarantee behind each.

What to know if you live in Austria

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per person per bank under the Einlagensicherungs- und Anlegerentschädigungsgesetz, and amounts above that are covered up to €500,000 for twelve months when they come from a transaction on a privately used home, a marriage or divorce, retirement, dismissal, disability or death (§12 ESAEG).

Interest on bank deposits is taxed at 25% Kapitalertragsteuer (§27a EStG). An Austrian bank, or the Austrian branch of a foreign bank such as Scalable Capital, withholds it and that settles the tax. A bank in another country with no Austrian branch withholds nothing Austrian, so you declare the interest yourself in the Beilage E 1kv that goes with your E 1 return.
