What to know if you live in Bulgaria
Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor per bank by the Bulgarian Deposit Insurance Fund, which now states its limit in euro. Money from the sale of a home, from a marriage or its dissolution, from the end of a job, from disability or death, or from an insurance or crime compensation payment is covered up to €125,000 for three months (BDIF).
Interest on bank deposits has had no final tax of its own since 1 April 2022, when the charge and its 8% rate were both repealed (art. 38(13) and art. 46(4), ZDDFL). It falls under art. 35(3) instead, goes into your general annual tax base and is taxed at 10% (art. 48(1)). A Bulgarian bank withholds 10% in advance when it pays you (art. 44a) and you settle it in your annual return. A bank in another country withholds nothing.
If an investment firm fails rather than a bank, a different scheme applies: the Investor Compensation Fund pays 90% of the claim, up to 40,000 leva (Investor Compensation Fund). Several of the providers on this page are brokers, not banks, so it is worth checking which of the two protects the money before you open an account.
