What to know if you live in the Netherlands

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per person per bank by the Nederlandse Depositogarantie, run by De Nederlandsche Bank. For six months after a house sale, a pension or severance payment or a life insurance payout, an extra €500,000 per person is covered, but you have to tell DNB about it yourself (DNB).

The interest you actually earn is not what gets taxed. Savings sit in box 3, which taxes an assumed return on the value of your assets on 1 January at 36%. For 2026 the assumed return on bank deposits is 1.28%, still provisional until early 2027, and the first €59,357 per person is exempt, €118,714 with a fiscal partner (Belastingdienst). No Dutch bank withholds anything, and an account in another country goes in the same box 3 section of your return.
