What to know if you live in Germany

Money in a German bank is covered up to €100,000 per person per bank by the statutory scheme, run for private banks by the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken. For six months after a life event such as a property sale, a divorce or an inheritance, that cover rises to €500,000 (BaFin).

Interest is taxed at a flat 25% (§32d EStG) plus the 5.5% solidarity surcharge (§4 SolzG), so 26.375% in practice, and church tax on top if you pay it. The first €1,000 of investment income is free of it, €2,000 for jointly assessed couples, under the Sparer-Pauschbetrag (§20(9) EStG). A German bank applies that allowance for you once you file a Freistellungsauftrag. A bank in another country withholds nothing, so you declare the interest yourself in Anlage KAP.
