What to know if you live in Italy

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per person per bank by the Fondo Interbancario di Tutela dei Depositi. For nine months after a house sale, the end of a job, retirement, a divorce or an insurance payout, that cap does not apply to the money in question (FITD).

Interest is taxed at 26% and an Italian bank withholds it for you (Banca d'Italia). Interest from a bank abroad received without an Italian intermediary is declared in quadro RM of the Redditi PF at the same rate. An account abroad also brings the IVAFE, €34.20 a year for a current account or savings book and 0.20% of the year-end value for other financial products, reported in quadro RW (Agenzia delle Entrate). Accounts whose highest value in the year stays under €10,000 are outside the monitoring duty.
