A Maltese bank withholds a final 15% and that interest never appears in your return. Interest from abroad gets the same treatment only if you arrange it with an authorised Maltese intermediary by 30 June, otherwise progressive rates apply.

What to know if you live in Malta

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor per credit institution by the Depositor Compensation Scheme, plus up to €500,000 per life event for money credited in the six months before the bank is declared in default, for instance the sale of a private home or a life insurance payout (Depositor Compensation Scheme).

A Maltese bank withholds 15% at source and the tax is final and not refundable, so that interest is not declared at all. Interest from abroad is different: you can arrange with an authorised Maltese financial intermediary, by 30 June, to have the same final 15% paid on it. Without that arrangement it goes in box 10 of your return and is taxed at the normal progressive rates (MTCA tax return guide).
