What to know if you live in Lithuania
Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor per credit institution, with all currencies added together. Money credited in the six months before the event is covered up to €300,000 when it is the proceeds of a home sale and up to €200,000 when it is an inheritance or a life insurance death benefit, claimed within a month (Indėlių ir investicijų draudimas).
The first €500 of interest a year is exempt, and that covers deposits with Lithuanian and foreign banks alike (VMI). Above it, interest is taxed at 15% up to twelve average wages, €27,745.80 in 2026, then at 20%, 25% and 32% on higher capital income (VMI). A Lithuanian bank withholds from the first euro unless you claim the exemption in your return; interest from a bank abroad is declared on the GPM311 return.
