What to know if you live in Ireland

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per person per institution by the Deposit Guarantee Scheme, run by the Central Bank of Ireland (Central Bank). Certain balances, among them the proceeds of a house sale, a redundancy payment or an inheritance, are protected up to €1 million for six months (S.I. 516/2015).

Interest is taxed under DIRT at 33%, deducted at source by an Irish institution (Revenue). Interest from a bank elsewhere in the EU is taxed at the same 33% but you declare it yourself, on Form 12 or Form 11. Interest from outside the EU is taxed at the higher of the DIRT rate and your marginal rate, and 40% also applies to EU interest declared late. USC does not apply to deposit interest, PRSI may (Revenue).
