What to know if you live in Slovenia

Deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor per bank, plus €500,000 for qualifying payments transferred to you no more than six months before Banka Slovenije declares the deposits unavailable, among them the sale or purchase of a home, insurance payouts, redundancy and death benefits (Banka Slovenije).

Interest is taxed at a final 25%, and the first €1,000 a year is not taxable, but only for deposits with banks in Slovenia and the rest of the EU. Interest from a bank outside the EU is taxable in full. The bank does not withhold anything: you file a napoved for interest by 28 February for the previous year and FURS assesses the tax by 30 April, payable within thirty days (FURS).
