Dividends and gains are taxed at 27.5%. An Austrian custodian, or the Austrian branch of a foreign bank such as Scalable Capital, withholds it and runs the automatic Verlustausgleich for you. With any other broker you report the income and claim the loss relief yourself.

What to know if you live in Austria

Dividends and realised gains are taxed at 27.5% (§27a EStG). An Austrian custodian withholds the Kapitalertragsteuer, and so does the Austrian branch of a foreign bank: Scalable Capital opened one in Vienna on 8 October 2026. With any other broker the income goes in the Beilage E 1kv with your E 1 return. Losses on realised gains can be set against other capital income taxed at the special rate, never against bank deposit interest or against other kinds of income, and they cannot be carried into another year (§27(8) EStG).

One practical difference: only a domestic custodian, including the Austrian branch of a foreign bank, has to run the automatic Verlustausgleich across your accounts at that institution and refund the tax on losses (§93 EStG). With a broker that has no Austrian branch you claim that yourself. Investor compensation runs to €20,000 per investor.
