If a firm fails, the FGDR securities guarantee covers €70,000 per client, well above the €20,000 minimum most of the EU applies. Nobody withholds anything on capital gains, not even a French broker, so box 3VG is yours to fill.

What to know if you live in France

Dividends and capital gains are taxed at a flat 12.8% plus social levies, 17.2% on 2025 income and 18.6% on 2026 income (service-public.gouv.fr). A French provider withholds the 12.8% on dividends on account. Nobody withholds anything on capital gains, not even a French broker, so you declare them in box 3VG and fill in form 2074 whenever your provider has not worked out every gain and loss for you. Losses are set only against gains of the same kind and carry forward ten years (impots.gouv.fr).

Two French specifics. Every account held abroad, a broker account included, has to be declared on form 3916 each year, with a €1,500 penalty per account if it is not (impots.gouv.fr). And if a firm fails, the FGDR securities guarantee covers €70,000 per client, above the €20,000 minimum used in most of the EU (FGDR).
