What to know if you live in Cyprus
Gains on the disposal of titles are exempt from income tax, and the redemption of a unit or share in an open or closed ended collective investment scheme counts as a disposal of a title, so fund and ETF exits are covered (art. 8(22), L.118(I)/2002). Capital gains tax at 20% reaches only immovable property in Cyprus and shares in companies holding it (L.52/1980).
Dividends are also exempt from income tax, but carry the Special Defence Contribution at 5%, and only for someone who is both resident in Cyprus and domiciled there, with domicile deemed after seventeen of the last twenty years in the country (L.117(I)/2002). A Cypriot payer withholds it; on a dividend from abroad you pay it yourself. Clients of banks are covered by the Investor Compensation Fund for €20,000 (Central Bank of Cyprus).
