What to know if you live in Latvia

Dividends and capital gains are taxed at 25.5% since 1 January 2025, and at 6% where the dividend comes out of profits taxed at the reduced corporate rate. A Latvian payer withholds; a broker abroad does not, so dividends go in appendix D11 of the annual declaration and gains on the DK capital gains declaration, quarterly when capital income in the quarter passes €1,000 and once a year otherwise (VID).

If you use an ieguldījumu konts, the investment account that defers tax until withdrawals exceed contributions, and it is held abroad, you have to report it to VID by 31 December of the year you open it, through the EDS. Crypto assets, and funds investing in them, cannot go in that account (VID). Investor protection runs to €20,000 per investor (Latvijas Banka).
