What to know if you live in Belgium
Dividends carry 30% withholding, applied by a Belgian intermediary, with the first €833 a year exempt and reclaimed through your return; that exemption covers foreign dividends too (Wikifin, FSMA).
The rule that really changes things with a broker abroad is the taxe sur les opérations de bourse: 0.12% on bonds, 0.35% on shares and 1.32% on capitalisation shares of unlisted SICAVs, each with its own cap per transaction. A Belgian bank collects it for you. With a securities account abroad you are the one liable, and you have to pay it by the last working day of the second month after the transaction, unless the broker remits it on your behalf (Wikifin). Financial instruments are protected up to €20,000 per person per institution (Guarantee Fund).
