If a Spanish investment firm fails, FOGAIN covers up to €100,000 per investor, far above the €20,000 most EU schemes apply. That cover follows the firm's home country, not yours, so with a broker licensed elsewhere it is that country's scheme.

What to know if you live in Spain

Dividends and capital gains are taxed on the same savings scale as interest: 19% up to €6,000, then 21% to €50,000, 23% to €200,000, 27% to €300,000 and 30% above that (Agencia Tributaria). A Spanish provider withholds 19% on dividends on account; a broker licensed in another country withholds nothing for Spain, so you declare the full amount in your Modelo 100. A net capital loss can be set against positive investment income only up to 25% of it, and what is left carries forward four years (Agencia Tributaria).

If a Spanish investment firm fails, FOGAIN covers up to €100,000 per investor, well above the €20,000 most EU schemes apply (CNMV). That cover follows the firm's home country, not yours, so with a broker licensed elsewhere in the EU it is that country's scheme that applies. And once your accounts, securities and funds abroad pass €50,000 in any one category, you must file the informative Modelo 720 (Agencia Tributaria).
