What to know if you live in Italy
Capital gains and dividends are taxed at 26% (Agenzia delle Entrate). Gains realised through a broker with no Italian intermediary go in quadro RT of the Redditi PF, and foreign dividends from non-qualified holdings in quadro RM. A loss can be set against gains of the four following years, but only if you declare it in the year it happens.
Holding securities with a broker abroad also brings the monitoring duty: you file quadro RW every year whatever income the assets produced, and pay the IVAFE of 0.20% of their year-end value there (Agenzia delle Entrate). Assets held through an Italian intermediary that withholds for you are outside it. If a firm fails, the Fondo Nazionale di Garanzia covers up to €20,000 per investor (Consob).
