What to know if you live in Ireland
Shares and funds are taxed very differently here, which matters more than any fee on this page. Gains on ordinary shares fall under capital gains tax at 33%, the first €1,270 of gains each year is exempt, and losses carry forward indefinitely against later gains (Revenue). Dividends are taxed at your marginal rate with USC and PRSI, and Irish companies withhold 25% that you then credit (Revenue).
Funds and ETFs sit outside that regime. They carry exit tax, 38% from 1 January 2026, and a deemed disposal: you are taxed as though you had sold every eight years even when you have not. A loss on such a fund gets no relief at all and cannot shelter other income (Revenue). If a firm fails, the Investor Compensation Scheme pays 90% of the loss up to €20,000 (ICCL).
