What to know if you live in the Netherlands
Shares and ETFs sit in box 3 like savings, so neither the dividends you receive nor the gains you realise are taxed as such. What is taxed is an assumed 6.00% return for 2026 on their value on 1 January, at 36%, above the exempt €59,357 per person (€118,714 with a fiscal partner). If your real return was lower you can report that instead, but then you get no exempt amount and a negative year cannot be carried into another one (Belastingdienst).
Dutch dividend tax of 15% is withheld by the company or fund paying the dividend, wherever your account is, and you set it off in your return (Belastingdienst). If a firm fails, the Beleggerscompensatiestelsel covers €20,000 per person for money and instruments it cannot return, never a fall in their price (DNB).
