What to know if you live in Bulgaria
Income from the disposal of financial instruments, as the law defines them, is exempt from personal income tax (art. 13(1)(3), ZDDFL). What decides the exemption is where the trade takes place, not where the broker is licensed, so the same ETF can be exempt or taxable depending on the venue it is bought on. Dividends carry a 5% final tax (Ministry of Finance).
If a firm fails, the Investor Compensation Fund pays 90% of the claim, up to 40,000 leva (Investor Compensation Fund). That cover follows the firm's home country, so with a broker licensed elsewhere in the EU it is that country's scheme that applies instead.
