What to know if you live in Germany
A broker with a German licence withholds the tax for you: 25% on dividends and realised gains (§32d EStG) plus the 5.5% solidarity surcharge (§4 SolzG), so 26.375%, and church tax where it applies, after the €1,000 Sparer-Pauschbetrag, €2,000 for jointly assessed couples (§20(9) EStG). A broker licensed in another EU country withholds nothing: you report everything yourself in Anlage KAP, and losses at one broker are not set off automatically against gains at another.
Your securities are held apart from the broker's own assets. If a broker fails, German investor compensation covers 90% of the claim up to €20,000, the EU minimum. It applies to cash and to securities the firm cannot hand back, never to a fall in their price (BaFin).
