What to know if you live in Portugal
Dividends and capital gains are taxed at 28%. A Portuguese provider withholds the tax on dividends and that settles it. A broker in another country withholds nothing for Portugal, so foreign dividends go in quadro 8 of anexo J and foreign gains in quadro 9.2A, while Portuguese gains go in quadro 9 of anexo G (Autoridade Tributária).
Two rules worth knowing before you choose. A loss can only be carried forward, for five years, if you opt for englobamento (art. 55.º CIRS), and gains on securities held for less than 365 days are added to the rest of your income when your taxable income reaches the top bracket (art. 72.º CIRS). A securities account abroad also has to be identified in quadro 11 of anexo J. If a firm fails, the Sistema de Indemnização aos Investidores covers up to €25,000 per investor (art. 10.º do Decreto-Lei 222/99).
