What to know if you live in Luxembourg
A Luxembourg distributor withholds 15% on dividends, half of a dividend from a fully taxable company in Luxembourg, the EU or a treaty country is exempt, and on top of that there is an exempt tranche of €1,500 per person, €3,000 for jointly taxed spouses. Foreign dividends are itemised on annexe modèle 180 with credit for the tax withheld abroad (guichet.public.lu).
The holding period decides everything on gains. Shares sold six months or less after you bought them are speculative and taxed at progressive rates up to 42.80%; held longer they are exempt, unless you hold more than 10% of the company. Gains under €500 in a year are not taxable, and losses only offset gains of the same year (guichet.public.lu). Investor compensation is €20,000 per person per institution (CSSF).
